soft ice cream in garage refrigerator

A customer of mine called me today to check on his refrigerator,when i got there his wife informed me that the refrigerator giving the problem was the spare one they kept in the garage, I observe all the meat were frozen but the two quarts of ice cream were soft,the two thermometers on the shelves were reading about thirty degrees,the refrigerator was not running so i took my hair dryer that i use to defrost the evaporators and use it to warm up the thermostat, the refrigerator came on and ran for about tem minutes then cycles again,--the problem with this refrigerator is---the refrigerator has no problem--the reason it is operating this way is because the temperature in the garage is about twenty degrees--the refrigerator was not designed to operate in such cold ambient temperature--if the ambient temperature does not reach at least forty degrees the thermostat will stay in the off position it might stay off for several days,but the meat will remain frozen just like they would if you take them out of the refrigerator and put them on the ground, if they never had ice cream in the refrigerator they would not know there was a problem, i'm writing from new york, these situations don't happen in warm states.

Interesting! We just gave up our garage refrigerator. Needed more space and hope to see a drop in electricity costs. Here in AZ the garage spends a lot of time over 100 degrees, and that old refrigerator was definitly not "green".
