case of the missing white woman syndrome

missing person

When a person is missing in any community, town or state, it is always a terrible thing to deal with, especially for the family and close friends.

News coverage of these events always help to shine a brighter light on the situation, but for some reason not every missing person seems to attract the media attention.

Some where in america, a hispanic little baby boy or girl is missing, the story might be mentioned in a little corner of the local news paper, but it will not make it to cnn.

A man went to work and did not come home for several days, his wife and children might notice that he is missing, but nancy grace will not talk about it on her show.

If it is a black man that make it even worst, most media people will just assume that he ran away so he will definately not make it to the nancy grace show.

The favourite to be featured as missing on the nancy grace show is, young white blond blue eyed female, natalee holloway has been featured on the nancy grace show so many time, i thought the nancy grace show was changed to the natalee holloway chanel.

Feature the blond blue eye young white female all you want, maybe thats where the ratings are, but every now and then even for two minutes, shine light on an average person, a slightly over weight man woman or child,

That could possibly be still alive, maybe someone is sitting across the table from them in a food court, or they are lost and cant find their way home,

Focus a little more on the average person, it's this same reason why lindsay lohan thinks she is better than everyone else, the media acts like they are the only ones that are important.

fyxer, your point is supported by today’s news. Took a look at each of the news headlines listed below in "case of the missing white woman syndrome in the news" and, not surprisingly, the attention goes to missing white persons. Since the below news headlines are from a current news feed, the headlines will change over time. But it's likely that the top stories will be about Caucasians...

point well taken-- once again it's follow the money for the media with a dash of racism and paranoia thrown in. Good hub. Time somebody talked about this in factual, matter of fact terms

You are soooo right, although I have to say that I think Nancy Grace is a complete psychopath and all people who go missing deserve better than to have a fool like Nancy making money off of their misfortune. What the world needs is a highly successful person of color that brings news back to what it was meant to be, reporting of only the facts, no supposition, no self-righteous BS and no theatrics. That type of commentator would have true empathy for other persons of color and those programs would likely be watched by more persons of color, in areas that might be helpful to law enforcement.

I think that your topic is a sad fact and I hope that this changes so that all people who are suffering can get equal coverage and equal access to help.

I might be living in a closet because I don't even know who Nancy Grace is! I still thought this was a great hub. Racism, in any form, hurts our entire society. How I hope for the day we see beyond skin color.

Not so much racism in the UK, but the financial standing of the victim...the rich get the attention Bob

You may have heard the phrase "the squeaky wheel gets the grease"? It's the family of the missing person who keeps it going, they call the news, newspapers, get them photos, videos whatever it takes and they keep bugging, to keep the story alive.

Personally, I think it's more of the size of the wallet than the color of the skin. If you can afford to get out flyers, give rewards etc... then those are the ones who get the attention.

It is also the Community, if the community cares then you will hear word of it. Case in point, 2 Hispanic boys (ages between 6 - 8) were taken from a school yard from the small town of Galesburg, MI about 7 years ago. They were later found in Florida.

A lot of it depends on the location, with the Amber Alert that is now in place it is making it much easier to get the word out of missing children. Adults, for some reason there has to be a 24 hour wait. Usually by that time, the damage has been done.

I have to agree Nancy Grace is getting rich on the bodies of young white people. Her show is a very biased opinion on what she believes and a lot of the facts of the cases don't get shown. Thank goodness the defense gets to say their side in Court, otherwise we'd have a lot of convictions on Nancy Graces' word alone... Which I hope people realize is the words that someone else has written for her!

Interesting Hub, hope you don't mind my 2 cents worth.

I don't know enough about this issue to offer an informed opinion, but if this is a pattern in the media, it isn't right. Your Hub did an excellent job of raising my own awareness of it.

You are right, fyxer, pretty white girls, especially blonds, get hundreds of times more attention than anyone else. But it is sort of random. Pretty girls are kidnapped and murdered every day, and only occasionally is one made into a big story. Makes me paranoid. It almost seems as if the media wants to distract us from something else, so they pick out some random white blond girls to raise a big storm about.

i guess it is not really anything personal it is all about what gives great ratings.
